Rodilý newyorčan John Zorn se narodil 2. září 1953. V dětství se učil na kytaru, flétnu a piáno. Později hrál nejčastěji na saxofon a byl skladatelem. Svá první alba nahrával v sedmdesátých letech, tyto desky však většinou vyšly až o mnoho let později. John Zorn byl členem několika projektů, jako byly například Painkiller (1991-1995), Masada (od první poloviny devadesátých let dodnes) a Naked City (1988-1993). Zorn je multižánrový umělec, hraje od klasické hudby, přes grindcore po jazz a další styly. V roce 1995 založil vydavatelství Tzadik Records, kde vydává svá alba on i mnoho dalších hudebníků. Vyšlo v něm již okolo čtyřset alb. Zorn spolupracoval s velkým množství hudebníků, mezi které patří například i Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Marc Ribot, Fred Frith, Mike Patton, John Patton, Ikue Mori, Gary Lucas, skupina Napalm Death, Eugene Chadbourne, Elliott Sharp, Yamantaka Eye nebo Bill Laswell.
